Vocabulary

Below are some common words and their definitions used within the IPC manuals & the electronics manufacturing industry. 

Adjacent

Lying near or close; adjoining.

Annular

Circle-shaped; having the form of a ring. 

Compressed

A lock washer is tightened underneath a screw, or it is Compressed.

Extraction

The act of extracting or removing.

Orientation

A component is installed and oriented correctly.  A component with a Polarity can be mounted backwards, so it Orientation is wrong.

Parallel

Two Printed Circuit Board traces or wires are installed or manufactured, running in the same direction, next to each other, but never touching each other.

Radius

A straight line extending from the center of a circle or sphere to the surface: The radius of a circle is half the diameter.

Sequence

The following of one thing after another; in the proper order of sequence.

Torque

To rotate or twist, in order to tighten.  The amount of tightness is measured using a Torque Wrench.

Wire Overlap

A wire/lead is wrapped more than 360 degrees and crosses pver itself, i.e., does not remain in contact with the terminal post.

Ferrules

A metal ring or cap put around the end of a post or cane to prevent splitting. 

Sn

Sn  is the periodic table symbol for Tin

Eutectic

When an alloy, like Tin/Lead (SnPb) is mixed to that its amount of each element, causes it to melt at its lowest Melting Point (MP), and has a 0% Plastic Range (PR).

Pb

Pb is the periodic table symbol for Lead

Ag

Ag is the periodic table symbol for Silver

Cu

Cu is the periodic table symbol for Copper

OSP

OSP is the 3 letter designator for a Lead-free Printed Circuit Board,   it means Organic Solderability Preservative

ENIG

ENIG is the 4 letter designator for a Lead-free Printed Circuit Board,  it means Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold

ImAg

ImAg is the 4 letter designator for a Lead-free Printed Circuit Board,  It means Immersion Silver

Preclude

To prevent or exclude something from happening.

Wire Overwrap

A wire/lead that is wrapped more than 360 degrees and does remains in contact with the terminal post.
